Om jonge vluchtelingen en nieuwkomers in contact te brengen met Belgische leeftijdsgenoten, zette ik het project #enwiebenjij? op in een OKAN-school (Onthaalklassen Anderstalige Nieuwkomers), en koppelde er een instagram-account en een tentoonstelling aan vast.

In de klassen installeerde ik een professionele studio met lampen en kleurenfilters. De jongeren leerden het materiaal bedienen en de bijbehorende woordenschat in het Nederlands. Een woord dat ze vast nooit meer zullen vergeten is ‘de afstandsbediening’. Want die kregen ze effectief in handen om zelf te beslissen welke ‘selfie’ op welk moment ze maakten. De kleuren kozen ze ook zelf. De anderen assisteerden telkens en kregen drie kleine fototoestellen om ‘the making of’ vast te leggen.

Op een banner in de tentoonstelling kwam het volgende :

Gentse jongeren kunnen in de instagram reageren onder de hashtag #enwiebenjij, een kleurrijk zelfportret opladen samen met een kort tekstje over zichzelf. Het portret delen, de foto’s van anderen ‘liken’ en hop, het gesprek kan beginnen.”

[ het gesprek is ook effectief begonnen met 2 klassen uit Edugo die #enwiebenjij? op het spoor waren gekomen. In juni organiseerden we een ontmoeting tussen de klassen, met ontwapenende spelen en andere triggers. Geen idee of daar blijvende contacten zijn uit voort gekomen, maar er was een zaadje geplant. ]

Adnan, Bshr, Jessica, Kamila, Klajdi, Mayami, Mohamed, Mohammed, Naomi, Nataly, Odai, Russom, Sadia, Safwan,
Saif, Sebastian, Sebastina, Snezha, Tenzin, Tihomir en Zainab kwamen uit tien landen : Albanië, Bulgarije, Ghana, Eritrea, Irak, Nigeria, Polen, Somalië, Syrië, Tibet.

De zelfportretten waren te zien van 2 tot 15 april 2018 in de jongerenbib van de Gentse hoofdbibliotheek De Krook.
De tentoonstelling was een digitale projectie met beelden, tekst en 2 video’s in een loop van 15 minuten.

Een aantal zelfportretten werden gepubliceerd in De Standaard en De Morgen.

After completing the 2015 #elektrogirl journey, Belgium to Istanbul return on an electric motorcycle, I initiated the annual ⚡️ Electric Night Ride meetings, in close collaboration with e-motorcycles riders from all over Europe, as a team. This is how we see and promote the events.

Pioneers. That’s what we are, each one of us. And ambassadors, that too.
Every one of us has a unique story why we first swung our leg over an electric motorcycle, and each can fill an entire night with e-stories. Yet —in the best case— we have met maybe one or two other e-bikers in real life.
Creating an international, annual ride-out to meet IRL was the solution. And riding through the night the logical timing, for it suits the silent e-bikes seamlessly. Hence the Electric Night Ride.

The Electric Night Ride is a non-commercial event for us, the e-riders, not connected to any brand, aiming to bring together passionate users, future users and interested citizens.
We equally aim at visibility, before, during and after the rides, to show the public which mobile options there are and how much fun they are, either through the event itself or through press coverage.”

For each and every Electric Night Ride, we had photographer, motorbiker and automotive enthusiast Bob Van Mol with us. He’s a regular photographer for many magazines, Motoren & Toerisme to name but one. Check out his work here.

The ENR’s broke unofficial records for an ⚡️-rider’s tour with all brands all along :

— ENR#1 in Antwerp, Belgium in 2016 : 55 e-bikes

— ENR#2 in Lucerne, Switzerland in 2017 : 43 e-bikes

— ENR#3 in Paris, France in 2018 was the largest number thus far : 69 e-bikes

— ENR#4 in Stuttgart, Germany in 2019 : 60 e-bikes

— ENR#5 for obvious reasons did not happen in 2020 nor in 2021, but a small team is working on it in Spain for 2022.

On 10 July 2015, I departed in Ghent from De Centrale, an old electric plant and cultural center. My return point on 24 August 2015 was SantralIstanbul, the equally old electric plant, now cultural center and energy museum belonging to the Istanbul Bilgi University.
In Ghent Bob Van Mol was the photographer, in Istanbul it was Huseyin Aldemir.

The map below shows my outbound and return journey as it really happened, with detours, back roads, last minute changes, coincidental meetings and rerouting. In total I covered 7.719 km for Ghent-Istanbul-Ghent.

Technical data of the journey :

— ⚡ motorcycle : 2015 Zero Motorcycles, model DS ZF12.5 + Power Tank, i.e. 15.3 kWh (max capacity) / very generously lent to me for the journey by Patrick Naeyaert, owner of nLab, Bruges

— 275 km = range record of the journey on a single charge (no highway)

— 210-220 km = average range (no highway)

— charging time (slow charge from normal household plugs) : between 11-14 hours i.e. a nice full night of talks, coffees, dinner, shower and sleep =:-]

Night talks are peculiar. The darkness enwraps, and creates its own intimacy and thoughtfulness. In Dostoyevsky’s ‘White Nights’, the narrator wanders through a nightly Petersburg, and meets a heart broken woman he willingly lends his ear. The story runs five consecutive nights.

The narrative as such is not my starting point, yet I do use the idea of nocturnal, emotional encounters. Irrespective of cultural context, I inquire into crucial events and intense emotions emerging from them.

The smuggled morphine came through Belgium. Kara was six when her grandfather died of diabetes. Her hero spent his last days without the agonizing pains of the gangrene. // “The Qur’an says, for men and women equally: ‘Thou should lower thy gaze’.” – I throw back: “Do you lower ‘thy gaze’ for other women?” – “Of course not!” We burst out laughing. I didn’t expect any other answer, not from her. // The fear came slowly, at the fireworks on New Year’s Eve which sounds like bombing. Then panic strikes, twenty years after the village was razed. Not when Sona was thirteen. Then she was Super Woman.

Technical installation :

— fifty portraits on two screens in a slow slideshow (8 min loop)
— a black and grey, silent road movie high up on a wall (9 min loop)
— the exhibition book with the transcript of all the interviews in their original language (large white text on black pages, digital print, hand bound, coptic stitch), lit by a small lamp
— audio in four loudspeakers set in the four corners, featuring fragments of interviews with long silences in between
— audio in two headphones, three war stories (about 4 min each)
— two large banners outside, at the entrance of the space

The space itself was a 8×8 m square, 4 m high, a dark curtain on one side, one door, no windows, no light.

Jongeren uit Afghanistan, België, Filippijnen, Irak, Italië, Oeganda en Syrië maakten en brachten een unieke performance.
Over hier en nu, daar en overmorgen.
Over angst, geluk, gemis, liefde, woede, hoop.

Wat je hoort is geen fictie.

De making of was een proces van zes maanden, in workshops, een tussentijdse try-out, een boot camp, tot de uiteindelijke voorstellingen.
We brachten drie voorstellingen voor publiek in juli en september 2017, in NEST, het tijdelijk project in de voormalige bibliotheek van Gent.

Drie jaar geleden toonden we kleurrijke zelfportretten van Gentse jonge nieuwkomers onder de hashtag #enwiebenjij? Een jaar eerder werd de voorstelling Schaduwtrein op de planken gezet met jonge nieuwkomers en jonge Gentenaars.

Maar hoe gaat het NU met ieder van hen? Waar zijn ze? Wat doen ze? Hoe kijken ze terug op de voorbije jaren? En vooral: wat willen ze, waar dromen ze van?

Met het vervolgproject #enwiebenjijNU? gingen fotografe Trui Hanoulle, beeldend kunstenaar Anneleen De Causmaecker en schrijver Gaea Schoeters op zoek naar de jongeren met wie ze toen samenwerkten. Ze maakten nieuwe portretten en stelden vragen, razend benieuwd naar elk van hen.
